Have you been paying attention to the news this week? I don't mean the serious, "real" news about politics, the war in Iraq, the economy or even the weather. Maybe because it's kind of a slow week at work, and I've been spending a wee bit too much time cruising the internet- but here are some of the things going on right now that tongues are wagging about.
#1. An admittedly very funny Saturday Night Live skit featuring Justin Timberlake.(sorry, you'll have to go to NBC.com, they took down the direct link as well as the YouTube version- but it's there) They aired the "bleeped" version this weekend, then posted the original uncensored edition.. To be honest, the uncensored version isn't really any funnier than the bleeped version, but it's the first time a network has officially taken a step like this. Lots of discussion in the blogosphere, big feature in the New York Times today. The skit also stars, and was produced by Andy Samberg, the brains behind the hysterical "Lazy Sunday" video that really pushed YouTube into the headlines.
#2. The whole mess about Miss USA, her underage partying (she just turned 21 this week), will she or won't she lose her crown, her tearful gratitude to Donald Trump who decided to give her a second chance and now- a big brawl between The Donald and Rosie O'Donnell who had a few choice words about the whole situation on The View the other day. Trump says he'll sue Rosie and has been disgusting in his insults. The View tries to be diplomatic, Rosie responds on her blog. And supposedly little Miss USA goes to rehab.
#3. The firing of Judith Regan. This is the woman from the Harper-Collins publishing house who was going to bring us the book- and TV interview "If I Did It" by O.J. Simpson. By the way, he still says he didn't. And I have a bridge to sell you. But back to Regan who's imprint has contributed so much to the entire downfall of society even before the O.J. book- the news of her firing is all tied up with stories about her alleged anti-semetic rants. You've got to love the fact her defenders are saying she's not anti-semetic- she was offensive to everyone. I personally want her to go away quietly, but that's not going to happen.
What else can I add? Britney's decided to buy some underwear, Nicole's eating, but she's also taking drugs and driving and sleeping with Hilary Duff's ex-boyfriend (they're supposed to have broken up because she wouldn't "do it").
Maybe I've been eating too many latkes.
Fortunately, next week, we're packing up and going up to the snow where there won't be any TV or Internet to distract us (me). Maybe by the time I get back they'll all go away.
